It's a new year, and I have no interest in a new me. Here's why.
I like myself, my life, and I like where I'm going. BUT this didn't happen by accident.
In this article, you will learn how I found the strategy that changed everything, as well as gain access to this tool for yourself.
This problem New Year resolutions
In our culture, January 1 is a day on which we collectively awake from our holiday stupors, look at our miserable lives, and make grand promises to ourselves that this year will be different.
This is a tradition that I vehemently took part in until 2021 when I realized that this way of living wasn't for me. I was exhausted from the constant cycle of trying and failing. What was worse was that I was losing more and more motivation and trust in myself with each year of lofty broken promises.
But what was to be done?
Would I admit defeat and accept that this was as good as it gets?
My inspiration
That wasn't going to happen. So I did what I always do when something in my life isn't working. I said a prayer and sat with the problem during each phase of my cycle. Then it hit me like a gust of winter wind! I was not getting where I wanted to be with my goals because I was pursuing them outside of the design of my environment.
For context, in the Midwest, we experience four seasons winter, spring, summer, and autumn. I grew up on a farm keeping animals, a garden, and sending my dad off to work in the fields every spring and fall. With this environmentally conscious upbringing, I was always aware of the seasons of the Earth in the way that they impacted the function of everyday life.
A simplified example would be our garden. In the spring we planned the garden and planted seeds. The summer was a time for growth, weeding, and certain plants produced fruit for us to enjoy. In the fall we harvested the final crops and prepared the ground for the next season. Finally, in the winter we consumed the remaining food that we had preserved, and the ground rested. Seed catalogs would also arrive at this time as we begin to ponder the next growing season.
I thought about this way of life which I had left behind when I left the farm. Could it be so simple? Could I follow Creation’s rhythm to accomplish my goals? To ensure that I had enough time for planning, growth, enjoyment, and rest to stay consistent?
I had already begun to change my lifestyle to match the energy of my menstrual cycle and had experienced the benefits of that lifestyle. (Learn more about that here) What would happen if I combined the two?
From the moment I made this realization a new way to structure my year came into focus. I must add that this was new to me but likely as old as the seasons themselves.
The solution
The practice that I developed marries the cyclical nature of the Earth and that of the menstruating Woman. I have followed this structure ever since 2021 and have never been more satisfied with my life. ( you can find the downloadable PDF for this practice here)
Here's how it works.
The year is divided into four parts. Each quarter begins and ends with solstices and equinoxes. This is simply because they are easy markers for the start of each season. with each season come objectives that are associated with that specific time of year. For example, Spring is the time to set goals and lay the groundwork for a successful year. You define what success looks like.
The objectives of that quarter are then guided through the menstrual cycle. Each season makes unique use of the various gifts of the cycling female existence. Success is more likely with this specific practice because on average a woman will experience three menstrual cycles each quarter. This gives her three opportunities to complete every intention for each season.
If each task has been completed and there's still more time in the quarter, she can double down on her goals or focus on other areas of her life.
Because this is a cyclical mindset rather than a race with a start and finish this practice also invites the participant to look to the future beyond this current year. This allows each year's goals to flow into the next.
For example, this year was so successful that in the fall I looked at my five-year plan and incorporated an experiment in preparation for the following year. I was able to do this because I had the momentum of accomplishment behind me and knew what my next destination was. ( see that experiment here)
My gift to you
I have found this practice so valuable that over time I have developed a planner that helps to guide me along throughout the year. It has made such a difference in my life that I want to offer it as a gift to you. If you also recognize that the New Year's resolutions aren’t working for you and are interested in trying a new way.
