Menstrual Calendar Journal review

Updated: Jun 23, 2022

This is (almost) the book I’ve been waiting for! It was crafted by two women, Veronica Ricksen, author, and Anna Friedland, Artist, and Designer. Together, they crafted the book which I foresee changing the way we learn about women's health.

The Calendar journal begins with 19 pages of information laced with beautiful depictions of the menstrual cycle in the form of plants and flowers. Some is instruction on how to use the book, The rest is information on the female body. From diagrams showing the way that the main hormones take you through your cycle, to foods that will benefit the body through each stage, this book has everything I want to know at a glance on a daily basis. If your not a menstrual nerd, books like Taking Charge of Your Fertility, and The Period Repair Manual may be a little daunting for someone just starting out on their journey. Ricksen managed to condense everything that is necessary to know into easy to digest paragraphs without compromising on the quality of knowledge. I believe that this is perfect for any beginner or the average woman for everyday use.

Following the informational section is a years’ worth of worksheets/ calendar journal. There is enough structure to help you know where to start but also the right amount of leeway, I have found that it adapted to my pre-established system seamlessly. Other tools included are lunar calendars and a wheel that helps to see where you are in your cycle easier.

My only critique is that it would be helpful to also have fitness information included. Other than the knowledge that at certain times you're more focused and have higher stamina than other times, there isn't anything provided on that topic.

Readability, 5/5

This may be the easiest book to read and apply because it only has the information the average person needs to know from day today. It’s simplistic and organization makes it ideal for anyone who just wants to make their life easier or for a mother to go through with her daughter when she begins her first cycle.

Reliability, 3/5

This is the only category that gives me pause. As much as I love this book I can not overlook the small section on V-steaming. The book suggests that this practice is beneficial to a woman’s reproductive health. But this practice is not accepted by any experts and is actually considered to be quite dangerous. It is a shame considering everything else in the book which is so well researched and helpful.

Relevance,4/5

Not only is this book relevant, but needed. I was hesitant to spend the $34.60 but the day it arrived I was so impressed that I turned around and ordered one to give away. As previously mentioned, this book is useful for growing understanding of and learning to work with your cycle. I wish every woman was given this book on the first day she got her first period.

So, If you can overlook the portion on v-steeming, I would highly recommend the Menstrual calendar journal. It is available for purchase at www.kapu.community and etsy.com
