Most people say they can’t be healthy because it’s too much work. No one seems to have enough time or money to eat well. This is understandable. We grew up on weight loss ads and a new diet every month, each promising the body you’ve always wanted if you just give these companies your time, energy, and 3 easy payment. We’ve been conditioned to believe that healthy is hard and if we’re not miserable, it’s not working.
What we seem to forget is that our bodies are made to feel good. That when we give our bodies the support they need, they support us back. This isn’t to say that it won’t be uncomfortable when we start to make changes. We are creatures of habit after all and change is hard. But remember our bodies WANT to feel good and work smoothly.
All of the information out there can be overwhelming and hard to sort through. It’s paralyzing, I know. But so much of health is intuitive. We need to regain a little faith in our ability to know what’s good for us and go back to some of the things we were taught as children. Too much sugar, stomach ache. Thirsty, drink water. Bored, go play outside. Research is good, but it won’t change anything if you don’t use what you know.
Yes, there is always more to learn but sometimes being healthy is a simple as a bowl of homemade chicken soup. And sometimes homemade soup is just some store-bought stock, leftover chicken, and whatever vegetable is about to go bad in the fridge. And If that’s where you are today, that’s ok. You still nourished yourself, you did what you could, and you didn’t go to McDonald’s. Well done. Maybe tomorrow you can have that 3-course meal and a full workout. But for now, bo what your grandma told you. Give thanks, enjoy your soup (or whatever you're eating) and maybe go for a walk when you’re done.
Here's the simple soup that I made today in about 5 minutes
1 can of chicken broth
Meat from yesterday's chicken
A cup of cooked wild rice
3 chopped carrots
1 clove garlic
And spices to taste, Salt, Steak and Chop rub seasoning, dried bay leaf, rosemary, and basil.
Fast, simple, and delicious. Now for that walk.
