Supercharge Your Coffee

Updated: Nov 21, 2022

Last week Monica Introduced us to the Adrenal Cocktail. Now let me (Rebecca) introduce you to this Morning Coffee Recipe that’s not only a powerhouse of nutrition but also happens to be delicious!

I didn’t always love coffee. I grew up in a Mountain Dew household where coffee was nothing but a joke. Then in high school, I went on a mission trip, and on a mountain somewhere near Mitla, Mexico, I tasted my first sip of fresh, black coffee. It was love at first taste.

Whether it was the beans, the exhaustion of the day, or the kind hospitality of the people that served it to me, no cup has ever matched that one.

Now after that literal moutan top experience, coffee has made its way into my morning routine. It's the 3rd drink of my day—Water, Adrenal Cocktail, then Coffee. But you know, this can't be just any coffee. With 4 simple ingredients, I supercharge my coffee with vitamins and minerals that support my body.

A quick note on the caffeine controversy

This coffee recipe is delicious and has important ingredients to support your body. But before we begin, it's important to acknowledge that caffeine is extremely debated as to whether or not we (especially women) should be drinking it at all.

  • In the negative camp, you have jitters, caffeine dependency, poor sleep quality, and the possibility that it may be harmful to your hormones, etc.

  • On the positive side, it may improve brain health, lessen the risk of certain diabetes, and more.

And finally, please remember that this is not medical advice. It is important to pay attention to your body, do your research and talk to your doctor when making any dietary changes.

The game-changing ingredients

2 Easy Add-ins

Cacao Powder

Cacao is the raw form of cocoa which means that it is far less processed and contains more nutrients and enzymes. It is also an excellent source of minerals like Calcium, Magnesium, and Zinc (just to name a few).

Experiment with how much or how little you like in your coffee. I just scoop it in as if I was making cocoa. If you are still eating milk chocolate, it is going to be a bit on the bitter side, but that's nothing our sweater alternative listed below can’t cover. But over time, you may notice that you need less and less sweetener to enjoy this drink.

Collagen Powder

Collagen is the protein that is used to make connective tissue in the body. From the elasticity of your skin to healthy joints, collagen is a major player in a healthy functioning body. It's credited for helping support your bones post-menopause, supporting your digestive system, it supports your thyroid, and much more.

If I'm drinking my coffee hot, I put this in after everything else because there is some debate about whether or not collagen can handle the heat. If I’m drinking it cold I add Ice and blend it, so the texter of the collagen isn't noticeable.

2 Better Swaps

Digestible Dairy Creamer

A2 whole milk! I'm not saying it will change your life, but I’m not saying it won't…

Long story short: back in the day, cows produced milk that had A2 β-casein. At some point, a mutation happened and now most dairy milk contains A1 and A2. A2 is easier to process and gentler on your gut than A1. You may be lactose intolerant, or you might just be like a lot of us who can’t process A1 vary well.

It's up to you if you want to splurge on actual creamer, but I like to be a kitchen minimalist and find that whole milk works just fine. It foams up nicely if you have a frother and adds that creamy texture I'm looking for.

Sweetener

Why are we using highly processed cane sugar, fake syrups, and whatever else? Just use real syrup! Seriously. Pure maple syrup is so tasty and good for you. It fights inflammation and contains antioxidants, and is a source of vitamins, and minerals like Magnesium and Zink. Need I go on?

For the sake of your insulin, it may be good to try and go easy on the sweater. But if you're just starting to get off the fake sugars, start with what tastes good to you and go from there.

All Together Now

  • Cacao powder

  • Collagen powder

  • A2 whole milk

  • Pure Maple syrup

If the upfront cost of all of these ingredients is a little daunting, feel free to add one at a time. But I know that compared to the cost of my "emergency" gestation frappuccino which gave me terrible gas and was a disaster for my blood sugar. These ingredients pay for them selfs extremely quickly.

Enjoy!
